EBRD Jordan meeting opportunity to explore more support, says minister

Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Emad Fakhouri on Sunday said the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development's (EBRD) annual meeting and business form, which will be hosted by Jordan on Tuesday, provide an opportunity to explore prospects for extending further support to the Kingdom to address challenges arising from the Syrian refugee crisis.

The minister spoke as he welcomed EBRD President Suma Chakrabarti for a discussion on preparations for the high-profile meeting, which will be held on Dead Sea shores under the auspices of His Majesty the King.

Fakhouri, who is Jordan Governor in the Bank and Chairman of the Board of Governors, also discussed with Chakrabarti and an accompanying delegation the bank's activities, investments in Jordan and opportunities for future cooperation.

The minister indicated that about 2,000 participants will attend the two-day meeting, along with wide participation of the major countries and donors.

He pointed out that this year's annual meeting will be held under the theme of 'Energizing Economies' to allow for dialogue on various challenges at the global level, including efforts to support economic growth and enhance the business environment in the countries and regions of the bank.

The meeting will also focus on a number of topics including the energy sector, infrastructure, sustainability, financing and FinTech and the mobilization of impact investments.

He added that the annual meeting will begin next Tuesday with a series of dialogue sessions, including a session on investment aspirations for Jordan entitled 'Jordan: fostering investment, trade and innovation throughout the region and beyond.' He said that the Prime Minister and the President of the European Bank will open the session, which will provide an opportunity for the participants to learn about Jordan's investment potential and will highlight success stories in various sectors and areas such as renewable energy, energy generation, medical tourism, education and advisory services.

The minister described cooperation between Jordan and the bank as a real success story given the remarkable growth in the bank's investment portfolio in Jordan, which amounted to more than 1 billion euros over the past five years.

The President of the Bank expressed his admiration for Jordan's efforts to host the bank's Annual Meeting and the Business Forum. He said that Jordan is the first country in the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean region to host these events.
