Tourism sector continues recovery

Amman, Aug. 6 (Petra) -- Jordan's tourism sector has continued its upward trajectory with the number of inbound tourists picking up by 9.8 percent in July to 531,806, official data revealed.

The figures, released by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, showed a 30-percent jump in the number of group tourists at 23,591, while the number of overnight tourists edged up to 453,446, indicating a 7.1-percent increase over the same month last year.

According to the data, the ancient city of Petra welcomed 58,449 tourists in July, signaling a major increase of 38.9 percent.

Commenting on the figures, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Majd Shwaikeh said the strong growth in tourism indicators was primarily driven by robust marketing efforts abroad, high competitiveness of the tourism sector and the introduction of low-cost carriers to the Kingdom.
