Labour Ministry confirms Thursday public holiday for private sector employees
AMMAN — The Labour Ministry on Wednesday called on private sector institutions to commit to the circular issued by Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Bisher Al Khasawneh announcing Thursday as a public holiday due to the prevailing weather conditions.
Ministry Spokesperson Mohammad Zyoud said that the PM’s circular, suspending work at public institutions, is also applicable to the private sector, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
Employers cannot coerce their employees to work on these days, and if the employee agrees, the employer must pay an overtime of at least 150 per cent of employees’ normal daily wage, Zyoud noted. He added that deducting the number of annual days off for employees or making them compensate for such days on the weekend is a violation of the Labour Law.
