    HPC calls on beefing up pan-Arab efforts to address development challenges

    Amman, Nov. 15 (Petra) - The Secretary General of the Higher Population Council (HPC), Abla Amawi, called to intensify Arab efforts to face the demographic and development challenges in the Arab region.

    Speaking during the activities of the 2nd meeting of the expert advisory committee of the Arab Council for Population and Development (ACPD), which was held remotely on Sunday, she said the repercussions of the Covid-19 pandemic have contributed to exacerbating these aforementioned challenges.

    This situation requires launching new policies in the fields of economy, job opportunities, health, education and governance, to meet needs of Arab countries, and achieve the desired goals for the societies' development, she added.

    Amawi, speaking in her capcity as head of the ACPD, stressed the need to benefit from Arab experiences and exchange expertise to reach the best methods to face the challenges, which will contribute to encouraging the participating countries to implement the recommendations of successful models within their societies, especially the recommendations made by countries that meet their social and demographic needs, and to enrich field experiences and best practices.
    The ACPD meeting reviewed following-up on the implementation of the decisions made by the 1st ACPD regular session, developing an Arab strategy for population planning, the Covid-19 pandemic's repercussions, exchanging experiences and reviewing best practices in the population, development fields, according to a ACPD press statement.
    To address the popluation-related challenges, the discussions also went over coordinating Arab positions for the 54th ACPD session, scheduled to be held next year, under the theme :'Population, Food Security, and Sustainable Development,' in addition to mechanisms to introduce Arab countries to the Population and Development Index, training to obtain the index's data, and launch liaison offices affiliated to the ACPD, the statement pointed out.
