    Tourism income ‘soars’, hitting $1.6b in Jan-May 2022

    AMMAN — Tourism revenue in the January-May period of the current year “soared” by 269.6 per cent or US 1.2 billion, amounting to US 1.6 billion, compared to the same period of 2022. The rise was driven by an increase in tourist numbers by about 1.1 million, reaching 1.4 million tourists, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported on Wednesday.

    According to Central Bank data, tourism revenue in May 2022 increased by US 369 million, or 320 per cent, compared to May 2021.

    Tourism revenue in May hits US 484.3 million, the highest ever recorded in May, due to an increase in tourist numbers of about 334,000 from May 2021, reaching 428,800 tourists.

    Tourism revenue from Jordanian expatriates accounted for 33.3 per cent of the overall income, followed by tourists from Arab countries (except for gulf countries) contributing to 24 per cent, tourists from the Gulf Cooperation Council countries with 21 per cent, Europeans with 11.6 per cent and finally the United States with 3.4 per cent.
