Medical tourism volume up by 25% over 1st 8 months 2022-PHA head

    September 26, 2022

Amman, Sept. 25 (Petra)- Chairman of Private Hospitals Association (PHA), Fawzi Hammouri, said volume of medical tourism in the Kingdom rose by 25%, during the 1st 8 months of 2022, compared to the same period last year.

Speaking on Sunday, at health sector conference, within the framework of Economic Modernization Vision, organized by Jordan Association For Medical Insurance (JAMI), Hammouri noted these figures indicate recovery of Jordan's medical tourism sector from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Health care and therapeutic tourism are top priorities of economic growth contained in the vision that was launched recently under Majesty King Abdullah II's auspices, he pointed out.

He also hailed His Majesty's keenness to develop health sector and maintain its 'distinguished' position, which would retain Jordan as the first destination for treatment in the region.

Hammouri spoke about PHA's plan to expand umbrella of health travel, which was launched at a global forum for medical tourism in 2017, and features 8 axes on this regard.

Presenting challenges facing Jordan's health sector, he said hardships include the need to obtain prior approval to enter Jordan for some nationals, lack of direct flights to the most important target countries such as Libya, Yemen, Sudan and Nigeria, in addition to the high operational costs and hefty taxes and fees.

Jordan's capabilities and infrastructure enables the country to receive all Arab and foreign nationals wishing to benefit from the Kingdom's health travel services, he noted.

Stressing media's important role in highlighting Jordan's 'distinguished' medical achievements, he said promoting the Kingdom as a destination for medical and hospital tourism requires the concerted efforts of all competent authorities.
